Why Your Toddler’s Bed Might Be the Most Important Piece of Exercise Equipment You Own

When most parents think about their toddler’s physical development, they think about playgrounds, swimming lessons, and Saturday morning sport. They don’t think about the bed.

But from a sports science perspective, where your toddler sleeps — and how they interact with their sleeping environment — has a surprisingly significant impact on their physical and neurological development. This is something I became genuinely fascinated by when building Little Willows, and it’s the part of our story I don’t talk about enough.

A Bit of Background

Before Little Willows, I spent years working in sports science — studying at QUT, working with elite athletes, and eventually working with the Queensland Reds and the Australian Institute of Sport. My entire professional background was built around understanding how the human body moves, develops, and responds to its environment.

So when Willow’s fall from a bed sent Tammie and me searching for a safer alternative, I didn’t just look at safety. I looked at the developmental science behind floor-level sleeping and discovered something that completely changed how I thought about what a toddler’s bed should actually do.

What Proprioception Actually Is — And Why It Matters

Proprioception is often called the “sixth sense” — it’s your body’s awareness of where it is in space. When you close your eyes and still know exactly where your hand is, that’s proprioception at work. When a gymnast lands a vault without looking at their feet, that’s highly developed proprioception.

For toddlers, proprioception is one of the most critical developmental systems being built during the 12-month to 3-year window. Motor development refers to the development of voluntary control over one’s body and its parts — crawling, walking, reaching, and grasping — and it parallels brain growth and development, influenced by both biological and environmental factors.

Here’s the part that most parents don’t realise: proprioception isn’t developed through formal exercise or structured activities alone. It’s developed through everyday movement — climbing, rolling, crawling, standing up and sitting down, navigating edges and transitions. Every time your toddler interacts physically with their environment, they’re building this system.

Which brings us back to the bed.

What Happens When a Toddler Gets In and Out of a Raised Bed

When a toddler sleeps in a raised bed — even a low toddler bed at 50cm — they face a genuinely challenging physical problem every time they want to get up. The drop is significant relative to their body size, the surface beneath them is hard and unforgiving, and most children in this age group are simply lifted in and out by a parent rather than navigating it independently.

From a motor development perspective, this is a missed opportunity — every single day, twice a day, for years.

Now consider what happens on a floor bed.

A toddler on a floor bed at 22cm from the ground can get in and out independently from around 12 months. That process — pulling themselves up, swinging their legs over, lowering themselves down, climbing back on — is a remarkably rich motor development activity. It requires balance, spatial awareness, core strength, and proprioceptive feedback all working together simultaneously.

The early years of life are critical for gross motor development, and a 2024 study examining over 9,500 children under 3 years old confirmed that environmental factors play a significant role in determining gross motor development outcomes alongside biological ones. The physical environment your toddler navigates every day — including their bed — is part of that equation.

The Gross Motor Skills Your Toddler Builds on a Floor Bed

Gross motor skills are the large-muscle movements — crawling, climbing, walking, jumping — that form the physical foundation every other skill is built on. The growth of certain human brain structures peaks at early ages, and complex motor interventions could positively facilitate this process.

A floor bed specifically supports several of these skills in ways a raised bed simply can’t:

        Climbing on and off independently — builds leg strength, balance, and spatial awareness simultaneously. A toddler who can safely navigate getting on and off their bed is developing the same fundamental movement patterns as climbing playground equipment — just in a safer, lower-risk environment.

        Rolling and repositioning during sleep — on a floor bed, a toddler who rolls during sleep lands on the floor (from 22cm) rather than falling from height. This means they learn to reposition themselves during the night without the risk and fear associated with a raised surface — which over time builds body awareness and confidence in their own physical capabilities.

        Play time on the bed surface — a floor bed naturally becomes a play space as well as a sleep space. Jumping, bouncing, crawling, and rolling on the mattress surface all contribute to vestibular development (balance and spatial orientation) and proprioceptive feedback in a soft, safe environment.

The Autonomy Connection

Beyond the physical, there’s a neurological dimension worth understanding.

Montessori philosophy positions independent movement as central to healthy development — not just physical development, but cognitive and emotional development too. When a toddler can get themselves in and out of bed independently, they experience something genuinely powerful: the ability to control their own environment.

Research consistently supports the idea that autonomy in early movement supports not just physical confidence but self-regulation — the ability to manage transitions, emotions, and wake-sleep cycles independently. A toddler who can get out of bed when they wake, rather than lying there helpless waiting to be retrieved, experiences the morning differently at a neurological level.

This is something Tammie and I noticed with Willow long before we fully understood the science behind it. She started climbing out of her Little Willows bed independently at around 14 months. Within weeks her morning wakeups shifted — instead of crying to be retrieved, she’d get up, collect a soft toy, and come find us in her own time. The independence the bed gave her extended beyond sleep.

What the Research Says About Movement-Rich Environments

A 2024 meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Public Health examining 23 studies found that motor development-focused interventions showed large to very large effect sizes on locomotor skills, object control, and overall gross motor development in preschool children — confirming that the environments and opportunities we create for young children meaningfully shape their physical development trajectories.

A floor bed is one small but consistent part of that movement-rich environment. It’s not a replacement for outdoor play, swimming, or physical activity — but it’s a daily, twice-daily, years-long contribution to the motor development environment your toddler lives in.

The Practical Takeaway

If you’re deciding between a floor bed and a standard toddler bed, the safety argument is compelling on its own — we’ve written about that extensively. But the developmental argument is equally worth understanding.

A floor bed that your toddler can access independently from 12 months isn’t just a safer sleep surface. It’s a daily motor development opportunity disguised as furniture. From a sports science perspective, that’s a genuinely meaningful distinction.

We built Little Willows at 22cm from the ground, with soft foam rails and no hard edges, specifically so that the independence piece was available as early and as safely as possible. The safety and the development aren’t separate features — they’re the same design decision.
